Have the patient pick a pleasing topic that they can think about while you’re doing your work.

Encourage them to imagine the optimum conditions and bring on as many details as possible.

Great topics are:

  • the best trip you’ve been on or that you’d like to go,
  • what you do for fun like kayaking,
  • imaging cuddling with your pet, etc.

Take the time

Take the time to do a simple practice with them before you start doing the dental work. It will be easier for them to do if you first practice it with them. It will help them be better regulated through the appointment and help manage the anxiety.
